Chemicals and Substances

Everything in the universe is made up of atoms. Atoms are very small particles which fit together to make up matter. A substance is matter that only has one kind of atom. All chemicals are substances.

What are chemical reactions?

A chemical reaction is a process where one or more substances are changed into a new and different substance. These new substances have different properties. For a chemical reaction to happen, there must be chemical reactants.

Chemical reactions happen everyday in our lives, they are even needed to break down food to give you

energy everyday!

What kind of chemical reaction happens when eggshells react with acids?

Eggshells are made up of calcium carbonate, it is what makes them hard. Lemon juice, vinegar and soda are different types of acids. When put together, the calcium carbonate (eggshells) and acids create a chemical reaction which lets out carbon dioxide (a gas).

The reaction will keep going until the shell of the egg is bouncy and there are no more bubbles floating to the top. When you take the egg out of the acids it's soft because all the carbon has floated out of the egg in the little bubbles.
